Melbourne gay bar Pricilla’s at 153 Commercial Road has abruptly closed, with its drag queen staff disappointed over the sudden and unexplained loss of their beloved venue.
It was called Diva Bar until it was re-launched as *Priscilla’s @153 back in 2009. But it was unable to open last weekend, and now its staff confirm to Same Same that its not coming back.
“Unfortunately the rumors are true – Priscilla’s has closed down,” its drag diva hostess Missy La’Minx confirms. “It’s a great loss for the community and a real shame.
“The owner hasn’t confirmed details as to why, but the place will not be re-opening. It was sudden and shocking to all staff and performers.”
Still in shock, fellow drag performer Abril Latrene farewelled the bar via its Facebook page. “Priscilla’s has been my regular ‘drag home’ since moving to Melbourne and I have loved nearly every single moment and enjoyed entertaining the punters.
“I am deeply saddened by the sudden closure to which no one was aware of and honestly it breaks my heart that we didn’t get to do one last show to see it off like it deserved,” she typed.
“It was a pleasure to work with so many people and meet so many amazing friends. Priscilla’s may be gone but the memories will live on.”
Now there are only two gay venues left regularly open on Melbourne’s Commercial Road strip – Heaven’s Door and DnM.
