Angry Queenslanders have gotten hold of the Australian Christian Lobby state leader’s mobile phone number and are targeting her with abusive calls and texts.
Following a disappointing week in Queensland politics where LGBT rights were rolled back, Wendy Francis, who has often campaigned against same-sex marriage and gay parenting, says she’s received calls “every five or six minutes” since Friday and has even had pornographic images sent to her phone.
The anti-pornography campaigner tells the Brisbane Times: “I also got three email messages with porn and the porn was disgusting.
“The problem for me on Friday was when I move an email into a folder the next email automatically opens up and so I would move an email into a folder to deal with it later and all of a sudden there would be this image of this huge penis on my phone. It was just horrendous.”
Although she could go to the police with information about extreme cases of misuse of a telephone, she says she’s not planning to, and has even tried to answer as many of the calls as she could.
“The people who are sending me the messages are not representative of the homosexual community,” she realises. “But they’re the ones who are being very vocal and some of them are really quite horrendous.”
Her controversial views on issues which effect our communities have gotten her in trouble several times. In August 2012 she apologised for her tweeted comment likening gay marriage to “legalising child abuse,” and denied being anti-gay. Then last year she campaigned strongly against a tame billboard showing an embracing male couple, leading to a memorable debate on live TV.
Opinions vary widely on whether the treatment Francis is receiving in recent days is appropriate. Check out some tweets below, and let us know what you think.
@brisbanetimes Any abuse Wendy Francis receives is richly deserved, given her long and ignoble track record of hate and bigotry.

Disagree with Wendy Francis pretty strongly, but there is no excuse for sending those kinds of abusive messages. Why lower yourself?

While I don’t support harassing people, even those as loathsome as Wendy Francis, she can’t be surprised that her meddling has upset people.
