Supportive politicians, partygoers and dancing sailors alike frocked and suited up for this year’s Titanic-themed Aurora Dinner on Saturday – with the rip-roaring event raising more than $51,000.
Guests arrived on the Sydney Town Hall red carpet with rainbow banners flying out and proud at the front of the venue:
Heading into the Ball room, guests passed through an ominous-looking glowing iceberg. Among the large number of federal and state MP’s and local government representatives were Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP, The Hon Tanya Plibersek MP, The Hon Jillian Skinner MP, The Hon Gladys Berejiklian MP, The Hon Don Harwin MLC and many others.

The night was hosted by TV gardening personality Brendan Moar and comedienne Lesley Hancock and featured moving nautical themed performances by Bev Kennedy, Rachael Beck, Trevor Ashley, Jeremy Brennan, Josh Quong Tart, Paul Mac, Dan Gorski, Brendan Maclean, Nathan Hudson and DJ Richard Weiss.
Triple J Host Tom Ballard was the toast of the party with the hilarious yet thought provoking Key Note speech titled ‘Love and Equality and Diversity and Bullshit.’ You can now read his entire speech online via Tom’s website here.
The money raised at the themed Aurora Dinner will go to Aurora’s ongoing support of its major beneficiaries, Twenty 10, incorporating the Gay and Lesbian Counselling Service. In the coming months The Aurora Group will also be calling for community (small) grant submissions in support of a number of important projects that benefit the GLBT community.
Aurora’s Events Director Wayne Cox says he was thrilled with how the night unfolded. “After volunteering for seven years, I was excited to take on the role of Event Director. A Titanic task you could say, one that would have not been possible without the support and hard work of everyone involved!
“As I looked around the room I was so proud of everyone who was there and the wonderful things we can achieve when we come together as a community.”
