This handsome new housemate entered Big Brother last night, and while the show’s women gently probe to uncover his secrets, outside the house there’s concern about his attitude to transpeople.
Within minutes of Ryan Buckingham’s entry into the house on last night’s live episode, keen fans of the show – and new admirers of the Melbournian 21-year-old – were looking into his online identity.
And word spread quickly about his tweet below, sent just a few weeks ago. Over a dozen people contacted us last night to make sure we knew about it…
Wow pretty off putting when you’re studying at uni , look up from the books and a tranny is sitting adjacent to you
— Ryan Buckingham (@ryan_buckingham) June 6, 2012#yuck#malefemalemale
The only thing #yuck here is your transphobia, Ryan!
2DayFM newsreader Geoff Field was particularly shocked by the tweet’s obnoxious sentiment. “Feel free to share – this guy needs to be brought down to earth,” he told his online friends. “What an ego and what an unpleasant man.”
We hope he won’t get away with any kneejerk bigotry in the house – as Big Brother’s ‘commandments’ state: “Housemates must never bully anyone because of their sexuality or gender” and “Housemates must not knowingly defame or vilify any individual or group.”
The situation coincidentally comes about on the same day that the UK version of Big Brother has concluded with transman Luke Anderson emerging as the ultimate winner.
“I don’t think it’s sunk in yet,” Anderson initially reacted to his victory. “A big part of it was about acceptance. All my life I’ve been an outsider. Thank you so much.”
It’s the second time a transgendered contestant has won the UK version of the hit people-watching reality show – Nadia Almada was the first, back in 2004. She later entered an Aussie Big Brother house for a brief stint.
Back home, geeky 18-year-old housemate Bradley is emerging as an early favourite to win the show. His lack of experience with the opposite sex and awkward but endearing vibe is making him a viral hit, inspiring several memes like our favourite one below…

But we haven’t met all of the housemates yet. Tonight at least one other guy will walk through the famous doors, and based on the hits we’ve been given, our gaydar has gone off.
“I’m the bitchiest person you’ll probably ever meet,” the young voice promises. “I tell people’s secrets.”
Listen for yourself. Must be family, right?
Big Brother continues each weeknight at 7pm on Nine.
