It’s unfortunately been another big year for people making strange and offensive statements about our communities.

And for the third year running, NSW Labor MLC Penny Sharpe is encouraging everyone to vote early and vote often for the most outrageous, ignorant and ridiculous comments in her annual GLORIA awards.

“This year we have received a bumper crop of over 80 nominations from around the world,” she says.

“A significant number from the political category came from the Federal Parliament’s debate on marriage equality.

The shortlist has now been decided, and online voting has opened for the winners in each of the six categories.

Among those vying for a GLORIA award this year are:

Cory Bernardi in the Politics / Law category for linking gay marriage for bestiality.

Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the International category for saying homosexuality is ugly behaviour.

Miranda Devine in the Media category, for her article linking gay marriage to the London riots.

In the Religion category, Major Andrew Craibe, a senior Salvation Army official who said that non-celibate LGBT people should be put to death.

Margaret Court and Jason Akermanis are competing for the worst Sports comment award, and Rupert Everett is nominated for the silliest GLBTI comment from within the GLBTI community for saying “I can’t think of anything worse than being brought up by two gay dads.”

The winners in each category will be decided by an online voting process and announced at the awards night on 24 October at NSW Parliament House, to be hosted by author and journalist David Marr featuring special guest drag star Joyce Maynge.

Major Andrew Craibe said no such thing. He presented the beliefs of his religion, when pressed by a very belligerent, aggressive radio host (and one not much better). Find me a quote that states "non-celibate LGBT people should be put to death" attributed to him from any source other than sensationalist media with an agenda to push and then I might consider voting for that option.
Personally, I think he should be removed from the list completely. Victimising someone for their beliefs, particularly when phrased respectfully and non-combatively (unlike Serena Ryan, unfortunately, whose attitude made me ashamed to be of the same gender, let alone any other affiliation) is something nobody should condone. And that's what it comes down to, if you put your vote on Major Graibe's interview. Condoning bullying, disrespect and hatred.
Haven't we all had enough of that?

And now that I've viewed the voting options, I'm not terribly impressed with the GLORIAs in general. Great numbers of incredibly offensive, damaging, plain old mean and cruel comments and circumstances are put up against each other, most of which deserve a great raspberry and public mention, and then the "Silliest LGBTI (GLBTI? I think I missed a change in terminology here... why is that necessary, exactly?) within the GLBTI (sic.) community" category only has two comments, one of which has been trimmed down to a single sentence quote that lacks any nuance and the other... I would not define as "silly". It's a belief. I just don't think these categories and these nominations have been given proper thought and vetting. That's just going to rebound back on the community, like Paris saying unintelligent things about gay men and AIDS rebounds back on her. I'm afraid I do make the assumption, from everything I've read and seen, that she's not the brightest bulb in the box. Well, doesn't it follow that if things like the GLORIAs are not well structured and thoroughly researched, it's going to make this community seem a bit dim too?

All of the comments detailed in this article are equally on par at a level that is the height of ignorance.
Homosexuality is a state of being, just as being left-handed is natural if you're left-handed.
The bestiality comment made by that hideous politician and the comparing of gay marriage to the London riots spewed forth by journalist Miranda Devine are the two comments that are especially dim-witted, non-sensical and insensitive. Totally offensive and based on a degree of stupidity that is worthy of dignified silence.
