Sold! Mitcham's trunks go fora grand

Matthew Mitcham’s personality wasn’t the only thing that was cheeky as he hosted the Closing Gala for the Melbourne Cabaret Festival at Ormond Hall-Village in Melbourne last night.

The Olympic diver stripped down from his suit and announced he would be auctioning his Funky Trunks.

The smiling sportsman’s underwear were used to sweeten the pot of an auction item that included a signed copy of his book, Twists and Turns.

Not only closing the two week festival, the Gala (sponsored by Manhunt) doubled as fundraiser for Australian Marriage Equality, raising over $4,000 through auctions and raffles. Generous bidder Adam Lowe left with Mitcham’s Funky Trunks for $1,000 as well as getting the winning bid on other auction items including a painting by Ross Watson.

Mitcham opened the night performing on his ukulele and later surprised the crowd by performing a strip version of Aqua’s Barbie Girl accompanied by the acclaimed harpist Tara Minton. Mitcham’s contagious charm rubbed off on the other talented performers who weren’t afraid to show a little flesh for charity. Tina del Twist , aka Wes Snelling, performed a burlesque number that peeled away all the layers that make up the gin soaked songstress; Karin Danger loosened the straps of her dress for bids but switched it around with bids to keep her dress on when she realised the top bids were coming from gay men; and festival favourite Spanky aka Rhys Morgan wouldn’t be outdone by Mitcham’s rear end, offering his own pants to the runner up whether they liked it or not.

In an evening that included the announcement that Jazz singer Jade Leonard and drag queen Art Simone would be marrying at the Equal Love march and midwinter vows in August, the most exciting moment of the night was the bidding for a dinner for seven people with former High Court Justice Michael Kirby. Adam Dent from QueerMoments placed the winning bid after pledging over $2,000 on the condition that Matthew Mitcham accompany him and his partner Nate on the night.

The star-studded cabaret performers helped Mitcham put the fun into fundraising, giving their all in an evening of entertainment and charity. The night ended with Melbourne’s cabaret elite singing along to pop and show tunes. The piano bar after party starred Trevor Jones wowing the crowd with his showmanship summing up the spirit of what the Melbourne Cabaret Festival was all about.
