I was a young orphan, brought up by my adult sister, Mrs. Joe, a sharp-tongued woman married to a simple but kind village blacksmith, Joe Gargery. One Christmas Eve, visiting my parents' graves in the churchyard, I was suddenly confronted with an escaped convict who ordered me (with threats) to bring him food and a file to remove his shackles. I complied, stealing food from the pantry and the file from Joe's forge. The convict was captured, but not before he repayed me in his own way by covering up for me regarding the food and file.
Later I visited Miss Havisham, a wealthy and eccentric spinster who lived at Satis House. While there, I fulfilled Miss Havisham's "sick fancy" to see children play by playing cards with Estella, a beautiful but haughty girl adopted by her.
Later a well-known London attorney by the name of Jaggers informed us that I had been endowed with "great expectations" —-provided with the necessary fortune and upbringing to make himself a gentleman.
Unfortunately, due to the unquestionably shitty conditions of my upbringing – what with the threats of violence, being ordered around by convicts and being subject to the “sick fancies” of the idle rich, I became addicted to cock, and the “great expectations” with which I had been endowed took an altogether different turn …
