Birn in Scotland, raised in Kiribati, Fiji and Australia. Educated in Australia and Canada. Married in 1963. Three daughters. Transitioned in 1986. Divorced in 1987. Gender reassigned 1989. Published autobiography _Katherine's Diary_ in 1992. Won Australian HumanRights Award for Non-Fiction 1992. Currently Librarian at Social Policy Research Centre, UNSW and Resources Development Worker, NSW Gender Centre. Editor, _Polare_ quarterly magazine of the Gender Centre. Transgender activist and educator.
