Film - The Simpsons Movie
During the first few minutes of The Simpsons Movie the jokes are a little thin on the ground – it looks like things could go either way, it could be really tired and naff, or it could be absolutely brilliant. Fortunately, it’s very much the latter.
The basic premise – the residents of Springfield have been completely ignoring little Lisa’s environmental proclamations and as such Lake Springfield has become a toxic wasteland. Finally things get to crisis point. There’s a clean up, a town meeting and Mayor Quimby tells the townspeople that there’s to be no more dumping in the lake. Unfortunately Homer, as usual, isn’t paying attention. He’s too busy hanging out with his new best friend, which just happens to be a pig. So when he dumps an entire silo of pig crap in the lake, essentially turning it into a natural disaster, the American government steps in, sealing off the entire town beneath a giant, impenetrable glass dome. Much like New Orleans the town descends into anarchy, and because the entire population is out for Homer’s blood, the Simpson family is forced to escape to the snowy mountains of Alaska.
The animation in the film is much more sophisticated and polished than a regular episode – it’s a pleasure to watch, and it feels very luxurious up on the big screen. While the plot may not be the most innovative, it’s really not the reason why The Simpsons have endured the test of time. It’s all about the sight gags and the one liners and the movie delivers these in spades. The Simpsons have been dominating our screens for almost two decades and it’s amazing to see that they can still pull a crowd – a paying crowd no less. It’s also incredible to see just how large and well developed the cast of The Simpsons has become over this time. A sweep through Springfield shows us so many recognisable faces and it’s a great showcase of what they’ve managed to achieve.
The most priceless moments include full frontal nudity from Bart, Moe being robbed and newscaster Kent Brockmann suffering from the town’s depleting Botox supplies live on air. I was guffawing unashamedly out loud.
If you’ve ever been a fan of The Simpsons then you’re gonna love this. See it on the big screen for the full effect.
The Simpsons Movie is currently playing nationally.
