Book - The Butt Book
This cult magazine from Amsterdam (in English) has a devoted fanbase, owing to its alternative take on the international gay/arts/music scene, and its tongue in (butt) cheek tone.
While the magazine often features some very famous queer people (interviewees include Michael Stipe, Edmund White, Gus Van Sant, Rufus Wainwright, John Waters and Jake Shears), there is often a slightly trashy or post-ironic take on things, and particularly the subject of sex.
Sexy and silly photos by the likes of Helmut Lang, Wolfgang Tillmans and Terry Richardson, as well as ordinary readers from around the world, are also featured, and the aesthetic is definitely an antidote to the gay world of airbrushed buff boys.
Here people are real (but still cute and sassy), sex can be bad or messy or torrid, and there is a sense of fun, banality, even subversion to it all. As queer filmmaker Bruce LaBruce notes in his foreword, “Butt matters. Butt fills a hole.”
Celebrating Butt magazine’s fifth anniversary, the Butt Book is a selection of interviews and photos that have appeared in the cult magazine and includes a lot of material from the rare, early issues. An absolute must-have for fans!
