CD - Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Trip the Light Fantastic
“Do it/Feel it/Touch it/Taste it/Be it/Live it/Need it/Take it.”
This is how Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s new CD starts with opener New York City Lights. She’s back and she’s not murdering the dancefloor – she’s killing it!
In a nutshell this is a pure pop album, BritPop even, but not cheesy pop. Sophie shows how much she’s grown as an artist and how many influences she draws from. The start of New York City Lights could be a nod to Daft Punk; there’s a bit of a nod to Cher, and a definite nod to the B52’s with the Fred Schiender collaboration, Supersonic(which is one of my favourite tracks I have to say).
Sophie’s voice is very good and I personally love that she keeps her accent while she sings. It’s a part of what makes her so attractive vocally, it adds an interest to her voice.
Today the Sun’s On Us is a fantastic example of just how good her voice is and how much she has matured as an artist.
Sophie also gives a very big nod to her electronic roots – let’s not forget that she got her start with Spiller’s ‘Groovejet (If This Ain’t Love), afterall. Catch You is one of the more get up and dance tracks on the CD and like Kylie’s Can’t Get You Outta My Head was written by Beats International’s Cathy Dennis. It’s one of the stronger tracks on the CD and is screaming out for remixes. “There ain’t no engine fast enough/my love is gonna catch you,” she sings.
If Murder on the Dancefloor made you fall in love with Sophie – then you should absolutely adore Me & My Imagination. It’s camp and it’s funky. If You Go reminds me of the Pet Shop Boys – the lyrics are slighty optimistic and bitter. China Heart is also a stand out track – it’s edgier, it’s stronger lyrically and vocally.
This whole CD is just high energy – it’s infectious, clever, and should make you get up and dance or at least smile. It’s pop thats sophicated and fun.
Maybe Trippin.. is best summed up in Sophie’s own words: “If I can’t dance/then I don’t want any part of your revolution.”
