Live - Divinyls - The Forum, Melbourne - 15/12/07

Divinyls were one of the most dynamic live Australian Rocks bands of the 80s and 90s. Clad in her sexy school uniform Chrissie Amphlett both shocked and thrilled with her controversial, boundary breaking on stage antics. Divinyls last preformed live in 1997 and were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2006, which has led to their much-awaited reunion.

I am among the lucky ones who experienced Divinyls live in their hey day, so there was no way that I was going miss this tour. Enough of the history lesson!

They were supported by Aussie band The Church – the scene had been set. We felt like we had been transported back in time. The crowd were screaming for the Divinyls and of course Chrissie, the stage was dark, the smoke machine on full. The band took their positions. Then Chrissie strolled onto stage and into the spotlight, the crowd went wild!

They burst straight into Science Fiction and then Pleasure and Pain and Only Lonely. The crowd loved the familiar songs and having their idol back on the stage where she belongs. Chrissie was wearing an early 1900’s maid’s uniform. True to form, Chrissie had a skunk skin clipped to her apron for shock value, which was more than a little disturbing. After a few songs the apron came off – along with the skunk.

Chrissy thrilled us with her theatrical performance, her duck-walk dance, hitching up her skirt and her famous pouting. She has an unmistakable vocal style, blending singing and speaking together which really makes you listen to her stories. They belted out all the classics Back To the Wall, Make Out Alright, Ain’t Gonna Eat Out My Heart.

During Boys In Town Chrissie included the security guy in the show. He was standing with his back to the stage Chrissie put her skirt over his head. This guy was so straight; he didn’t react at all, much to Chrissie’s disgust. She wasn’t going to let him get away with that and wrestled him until she managed to steal his watch holding it victoriously in the air for all to see.

When they exited the stage they left the crowd begging, stamping and chanting for more. They gave the encore we all wanted with the popular and controversial I Touch Myself followed by I’ll Make You Happy. But that wasn’t enough for the pumped up, demanding crowd. Divinyls have never been known to disappoint their audience, and they re-emerged with Bless My Soul as their final song.

What a performance! There are some bands that you must see live before you die. Divinyls is definitely one of them.
