CD - Keith Urban - 18 Kids

18 Kids is a compilation of songs from the last eight years of Keith’s career – so basically from when he made it big in the US market. It contains sixteen of Urban’s hits as well as two new songs – the two new songs being Romeo’s Tune and Got It Right This Time (The Celebration).

My boyfriend is supportive of my reviewing, although he doesn’t always necessarily like the CDs that cross the kitchen counter from Same Same. But when he saw the Keith Urban CD his response was “hot diggity damn!” We also had the good fortune of seeing Keith Urban perform last year – it was a fantastic concert, he is a seriously great entertainer. So there is a chance that this review could be slightly biased.

Now I am not the biggest fan of country music but I do have to say that Keith is one of those rare artists that you can quite easily get into. The fact that he’s hot also helps. He is also a fantastic guitar player and this is highlighted in quite a few tracks like Who Wouldn’t Want To Be Me for instance. Keith used to be a session musician for Charlie Daniels and Emerson Drive, as well as on albums such as Garth Brooks’ Double Live, Dixie Chicks’ Fly, and Paul Brandt’s This Time Around.

I guess country music generally is one of those things that you can either take or leave. I used to generally just leave it. But this album is one of those that isn’t strictly country – its like nu-country or some sort of crossover. Its a bit more mainstream almost, veering towards rock and the ballads are pretty much the standouts – Making Memories Of Us is probably one of the most beautiful songs on the album – it’s also the track he sang to Nicole at their wedding. You’re My Better Half is another one of the standout ballads on this compilation.

This is a very strong compilation that shows how a boy who grew up in Caboolture in Queensland, has grown to become one of Australia’s most successful exports.

Keith Urban – 18 Kids is available now through EMI.
