CD - The World's Greatest Funky House Mix

Don’t let the title deceive you. This isn’t the world’s greatest anything… it’s just three CDs of music. Not particularly great music either – just music. I think you always have to be a bit dubious when the person who mixed the CDs isn’t even credited on the sleeve.

This makes this CD set sound awful. It’s not awful. It’s probably, if anything, mediocre.

I had no real expectations going into this CD set.

CD1 is labelled Funkier and does actually have a couple of corkers on it. I have pleasantly suprised by the opening track Fatboy Slim – Right Here (Freemasons Remix) which is one of the better versions I’ve encountered. Sami Dee & Freedy Jones – Gypsy Woman 2007 is also a standout – this is actually Crystal Waters track from the early nineties. Axford’s closing track We Gotta Love is another great one. This is probably the best CD out of the three.

CD2 is apparently Fiercer. I would have labeled CD2 Commercial. Because that is what it is. It’s pure commercial house. Armand Van Helden’s My My My opens the CD and that’s about the only standout. There’s a couple of ATFC tracks that start touching something that’s a bit deeper than commercial house but unfortunately this CD just doesn’t deliver anything much.

CD3 is Deeper. Now when I think of what deep house could be – I would think of music that is almost tribal in nature. Well this isn’t… It’s just more of the same really, more commercial house which is evidenced by Filterfunks’ SOS (a cover of the Police’s SOS ) which isn’t a bad track. This CD really got on my nerves probably because it’s very vocally driven and I was expecting something that was a bit more beat-driven.

Overall, this is a rather mediocre compilation. It’s not great, it’s not bad – if you find it a bargain bin I would probably suggest picking it up. Also if you want an introduction into commercial house music this could be a good buy. If however you are expecting the “greatest” and “funkiest” then you’d better leave this one where you find it.
