CD - Kate Miller-Heidke - Little Eve (Special Edition)
Question: What do you get when you mix modern opera with punk music? Answer: Kate Miller-Heidke. It’s a bit like Barbie meets Sid Vicious. Kate is a dramatic and emotive performer who has an opera trained voice and a vast vocal range who dares to be different blending opera, punk and pop into mini masterpieces. Kate has amazing stage presence with her platinum blonde hair, punkish attire and ever-changing vocals from pop through to opera.
The Little Eve CD was released ten months ago but due to its growing popularity and an ARIA award Sony have re-released it with a DVD. The DVD Live At The Chapel has fantastic live footage of eight tracks filmed in front of an attentive crowd at The Chapel and Words filmed at the ARIA awards. It includes two previously unreleased tracks (but favourites at her live shows) including a comical track Australian Idol about her friends and family pushing her to appear on Australian Idol, and she has quite a dig at the Idol judges. The other track being a very mixed up punk/opera version of John Farnham’s You’re the Voice. It also includes two of her film clips Words and Make It Last wearing her puffed up Barbie dresses, both are quite unusual.
The stands out tracks on the CD are Make It Last and Words, which are the first two singles from the album and I quite like the tracks Little Adam and Thanks For Today. The next single due to be released is Space They Cannot Touch. A lot of the songs start out pretty normal and then Kate’s voice explodes into a soaring opera siren or she will go the other way and totally punk-up the song.
Now, Kate’s music is quite diverse and requires an acquired taste – on the first listen I didn’t know what hit me. But by the third repeat I was converted. The DVD was a great help to appreciate Kate’s musical expression. And if you’ve already got the CD and love it, put that copy in the car and go out and buy this CD/DVD edition.
Kate Miller-Heidke – Little Eve (Special Edition) is out now through Sony BMG.
