Theatre - La La Land - Darlinghurst Theatre
It’s not uncommon for Aussies to feel like small fry when we travel overseas. The experience must be even more intense for those in show business who try their luck in Hollywood – that’s the story told in La La Land, the new play by Christopher Johnson playing at the Darlinghurst Theatre.
Terry Swanton has just arrived in Los Angeles after winning an AFI award back in Oz for his first film, Bushdance, a quirky story about an Aboriginal coming out of the closet. Needless to say, it’s just too darn niche for those Yanks he needs to impress; fortunately, he has a brand new script and everyone thinks it’s a winner.
Terry shacks up with his actor mate Jason, who has already made the move to Hollywood from Australia. Jason is what we’d call a dipshit here in Australia, and hilariously, every time he goes for an audition with his American accent on he gets asked “Jason, are you Australian?” before they send him packing.
Terry, on the other hand, has got an interview with a major film baron, Jimmy Fleishberg, who read his script and loves it. Despite loathing Bushdance (and it’s quite a funny sequence as he tells Terry why), he will make this film; but it will be set in America, the main star has already chosen (an action hero) by Fleishberg, and Terry won’t even get to direct it.
The film does indeed get made – but not before a series of hilarious sequences highlight just what strange creatures exist in Hollywood, not just from Australia or America, but from around the world.
La La Land plays at Darlinghurst Theatre, Kings Cross until May 24th.
