The Verses At The Toff In Town

The intimate setting of The Toff in Town seems to be made for bands like The Verses. The audience is attentive and no one is trying to yell over the band; everyone is there to see what they can do.

And boy, they can do a lot. Aside from the obvious highlight of Ella Hooper’s trademark pipes, Jorge Rodrigues’ double bass makes a real impression, especially during heart-wrenching ballads such as Hometown and Things You Do.

The large band (six members) sounds as though they’ve been jamming together for decades, rather than just over a year. (Their first official gig as a band was early last year at the Nuclear Fools Day protest, at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl.)

Three of the last four shows have seen Dan Sultan join The Verses on stage for the duet Running Away which, while being very ‘Grease’-like, can come off as a ‘who’s more awesome?’ competition (which is clearly won by Ella, but still very impressive to watch).

Other song highlights are: Things You Do, Salt, Everything At Once, and Teeth.

Killing Heidi is dead. Long live The Verses. 4 stars (out of 5)

There’s still time to check out The Verses during their residency at The Toff in Town on Swanston St, every Tuesday until the end of June. Click here for details from our What’s On Guide
