CD - Ashanti - The Declaration
We first heard of Ashanti with the Ja-Rule track Always On Time way back when in 2002. Since then, she’s had a string of songs and has now released her sixth studio album The Declaration. With a declaration that she wants to marry rapper Nelly who she has been dating for a great many years now, the album is certainly a declaration of who she is as a music artist.
Shrouded in controversy is her single The Way That I Love You. The film clip has come under fire from the family values groups in the US. The film clip shows images of blood splatters on walls, a knife dripping with blood and the innuendo that the singer has just murdered her lover. What better way to release an album than to have controversy surrounding it. It isn’t necessary though as the album is well put together and reflects why she was signed by P. Diddy at the tender age of 14.
Throughout the album, she pulls in some music heavy weights like Babyface, Rodney Jerkins and Jermaine Dupri who all add their own touch of magic to the overall effect of the album. The track Things You Make Me Do features the talented Robin Thicke with both of them adding their own magic towards the song. The simple vocal works that carry through the traffic works and the song is one that deserves attention. The other track which draws the ear is the collaboration Body On Me featuring Nelly and Akon. The three different styles of voice all work together to create something that will require you to listen a second time to make sure it is as good as you thought.
She may look like Beyoncé these days but Ashanti is much more of an artist and has a stellar career ahead of her. With six albums now under her belt, she has the experience and talent to pull off another six and will keep her in the music industry’s good books for some time to come. Her releases are always new, always well put together and The Declaration is no different. Even if her music isn’t your style, put it on the “to listen” list.
Ashanti – The Declaration is out now through Universal Motown.
