CD - John Mellencamp – Life, Death, Love And Freedom
John Mellencamp is as famous for his many name changes as he is for his music that dominated the eighties. He’ll always be Jonny Cougar to me. John’s music in the eighties was loud and rocky and he had the occasional pop song. On this CD John has a distinct blues edge… and I like it.
As the title suggests the songs are about life, death, love and freedom, which suits John’s new blues style. I’m not so keen on the negative death songs, not that I’m expecting happy blues songs. For example, one of the verses in the first track Longest Days, “Sometimes you get sick and you don’t get better, that’s when life is short even in its longest days”, is far too negative for me. My Sweet Love is a really cool, rockin’ track that’s much more positive and is my favourite song from the album. The bluesiest tracks are If I Die Sudden, another death song but pretty cool and John Cockers, a track about knowing many people but having no friends.
After listening to this CD you’d think that John Mellencamp had been a blues guy all his life. His guitar style and raspy voice all fit together naturally to create these modern day/old blues style songs. It’s a pretty good album.
There’s an extra disc with this one too – some new technology – a DVD, but it’s an audio DVD, not a visual one. It is to be played as a CD in your DVD player or DVD drive on your PC. The benefit is it is high-definition audio, on par with the master recording tapes, depending on the quality of your sound system. This is the first ever album produced in this format, I’m sure many will follow suit.
