The queer scene has always appreciated a good drag name. Back in my day it was the likes of Simone Troy, Kristy McNicoll, Mitzi MacIntosh and Verushka Dahling. Those names had class. They said “back off bitch, I’m a super-glamazon who will outwit you at every turn.”

Thanks to The Drag Queen Baby Name Book by Boaz Stark, I now know to classify these names as ‘Glamour Drag’ – a name that isn’t a pun but is so glitzy it just has to be drag. You learn something new everyday.

In this new fangled world where drag performers star alongside teen-aged cuties on Australian Idol, the names that make the grade are more likely to be Courtney Act, Tora Hymen or Dita Von Sleaze. Of course, Boaz has taught me that these little babies have their own categories as well. The first two are ‘Vernacular Phrase Drag’ – names derived from common phrases which when uttered in a natural, colloquial fashion, become a drag name. And the third is ‘Triple Barrel Drag’ – where a middle name or initial is necessary. Triple Barrel Drag! What a title! Honey, if I were a boy being a girl, I would call myself Triple Barrel Drag in a New York Second.

Hundreds of names are featured The Drag Queen Baby Name Book – all of them hilarious and alphbetised within an inch of their life. So you can find the moniker you’re after, even if you’re in a Kay Hole or in the midst of a Coco Verdose.

I’ve always thought my drag name was Butch Harrington (first pet and street) but I’ve decided to get into Vernacular Phrase Drag and call myself Poppa Wheelie.

Thanks Boaz for bringing me into the new world!
