Film - Every Little Step - Sony Pictures
Fans of the musical A Chorus Line should drop everything. Every Little Step, the documentary about the making of the revival of Broadway’s longest running show, opens this Thursday.
In a case of art imitating, well, art, this movie follows the steps it takes to put on a Broadway musical. From the point of view of the producers and the potential cast, this movie takes you on a 12 month journey from open casting call to opening night.
But that’s not all, this movie tells you the story of this Broadway classic from its beginnings. From when 20 friends got together at midnight on January 26, 1974 to talk about their lives, a gathering that provided the groundwork for the show, to the current preparations for the revival.
The documentary is put together very well, it moves very fast and my only complaint is that it’s all over far too soon. As a huge fan of the original musical I could have watched this film for hours. Loads of archive footage from earlier performances and productions, as well as Michael Bennett’s heartfelt Tony Awards speech, will be fan pleasers.
There are some tear-jerking moments in this movie, the audition by Jason Tam as ‘Paul’ not only had the producers in tears but also most of the preview audience, myself included.
Baayork Lee (the original Connie) is the head choreographer and it’s obvious she knows her stuff as she puts the wannabes through their paces.
This movie is a beautiful insight into how this extraordinary Broadway phenomenon began and also shows us where it’s going.
For fans of the musical, this is your must see movie of the year. For those who are totally unfamiliar, this movie will make you want to jump on a plane and fly to New York to see it.

Every Little Step is released through Sony Pictures July 2, appearing in selected theatres in Sydney and Melbourne only.
