Theatre - Forbidden Broadway - Squabbalogic

If you’re a fan of Broadway musicals, then you have to see Forbidden Broadway. Squabbalogic theatre company have taken some of your favourite Broadway numbers and ‘rewritten’ them in extremely evil and funny ways.

No musical is safe! Chicago, Mamma Mia, Les Miserable, Wicked, Cats, Rent, Hairspray and Phantom of the Opera, are just a few shows that get targeted.

Some of the world’s most respected entertainers are also victims. Barbra Streisand, Harvey Fierstein, Rita Moreno, John Travolta and Bebe Neuwirth, are sent up beautifully. And have you ever wondered what happened to the little girl from Annie? Well, you’ll find out!

This incredibly talented cast of four play all the characters and do more costume changes than a Kylie concert, but they do it effortlessly.

Christina Byrne and Linda Hale immortalise the likes of Liza Minelli and Carol Channing impeccably. Mark Simpson channels Stephen Sondheim with hilarious results, but it’s the sexy Blake Erickson whose portrayal of Mandy Patinkin’s ‘overacted’ performance on David Letterman’s show that gets the most laughs. Alex Ash is the show’s genius musical director and plays piano for the entire performance.

The Statement Lounge, underneath the State Theatre in Market Street, is a great venue for this show. It’s very intimate, and has an operating bar. Your entry ticket even has a ‘buy one drink get one free’ voucher with it.

This show is ‘tears streaming down your face’ hilarious, and the opening night audience just lapped up every moment of the performance. At two hours long, including interval, this is a great night out and well worth the ticket price. You’ll never look at your favourite musical the same way again, but you will look at it with a new found point of view.

There are only two performances left, this Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th July, so get in quick before it sells out. If you’re as much of a fan of musicals as I am then you won’t forgive yourself if you miss this one.

Forbidden Broadway plays at The Statement Lounge this Friday, July 3 and Saturday, July 4.
