The Scissor Sisters in Sydney

Luna Park looks like it would be an amazing venue for bands, but the Big Top would seriously be the worst live venue I have ever been to. The sound is tinny and awful. The vocals always get lost within the feed back and bassy drone.

Yet tonight, I have decided to brave the shit sound and the cold Sydney winter to go and see The Scissor Sisters. I’ve never been a huge fan, but like their quirkiness and have always had a massive boner for their guitarist.

I spent the earlier part of my evening sexting twinks, so by the time I arrived the support band had already finished. Their name had the word ‘Kids’ in it. I’m sure they were awful. For nobody was inside the building when I arrived, but rather running around, laughing at their reflections in the Crazy Mirrors that had been haphazardly strewn around the grounds.

A really awful DJ was on. He played Funky Town. This to me is the greatest sin a DJ can commit, unless they are playing a set at Rooty Hill RSL club or at the Logies after party – which let’s face it – is the same thing.

Anyway – The Scissor Sisters came on, right on time. I respect promptness and was duly impressed. They also look incredibly sexy standing alongside each other. This impressed me also.

The set opened with Nightwork and was quickly followed by Laura. It was evident that the band are quite tight and actually run like a smooth machine. Their movements are all co-ordinated and they seem to play off each other. Anna Matronic was warm and engaging, and while Jake was all high energy and precise vocals – he seems a reluctant rockstar in real life. Happy to let Anna Matronic to do most of the talking. He just seethed sexily alongside her- and was even better at it when he took of his shirt.

The crowd was energetic for a Tuesday night, but the sound let everything down. It improved slightly around the time they played Tits , but not by much. At points you could see Jake walking around the stage trying to find a place he could stand with out feedback occurring. But half way through the show you could see that even he was getting pissed off with it.

The Scissor Sisters themselves put on a great, high energy show that covered all the songs you would want to hear. Even their cover of Pink Floyd’s Comfortably Numb , which I always considered a strange choice for them, as it’s basically a love song to heroin.

And even though his vocals were barely audible, you could actually hear that Jake was belting the songs out perfectly- but the sound system just wasn’t translating it.

If this concert had been a handjob, I would have left satisfied and happy. If it were a blow job I would have felt awkward and cheated.

7/10.
