CD - Missy Higgins - On A Clear Night
Missy Higgins new album On A Clear Night has only been out for a little while now, debuting at number one on the ARIA charts. Her comeback single Steer shot up into the top ten. Looks like another promising album for this bold singer/songwriter.
The first release of Higgins’s career – Scar – saw her soar to number one within a matter of weeks. It wasn’t long after that her debut album The Sound Of White also went straight to number one. She’s played in sold out concerts all over Australia to thousands of screaming fans. Yes, Missy’s had a pretty enviable ride so far.
It’s easy to see why people relate to Higgins. She’s likeable. Her lyrics tap into the universal pain and anguish of lost love and bruised hearts. She comes across as just another ordinary person passing you by in the street. She doesn’t attract a huge amount of media attention. In fact, it seems like the only time she’s in the public eye is when she is either singing or promoting her music.
On A Clear Night is a beautifully crafted assortment of tear jerkers set against an elegant acoustic and piano backdrop. Her delivery sits somewhere between Sarah Blasko and Damien Rice. She belts out each soulful melody with passion and conviction. A stand out track on the new album is Where I Stood. It captures everything Missy Higgins is about – heartbreaking lyrics, gorgeous piano accompaniment and even touches on the mystique surrounding her sexuality. She sings intimately, as though she’s sitting right across from you, transforming the simplest of words into real emotions which linger long in your mind after the track has ended.
The only criticism here is don’t expect anything new. If you’re not a fan then perhaps you should give this one a miss. There seems to be a lot of similarity between each track – this isn’t necessarily a negative thing, it all depends on how you look at it. Consistency can be a good thing – and if you’re looking for the soundtrack to your next heartache, then this is definitely the one to choose.
Missy Higgins – On A Clear Night is out now through EMI.
