Dodger Theatricals, Rodney Rigby and Dainty Group present
JERSEY BOYS
The Story of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons
@ Lyric Theatre, QPAC, Cultural Centre, South Bank
From 13 July 2012

You’ve heard the songs but have you heard the story? Jersey Boys opened at Qpac’s lyric theatre on the weekend and is swiftly grown a reputation of one of the must-see musicals of 2012.

Frome start to end you’ll find yourself tapping along to the music as you’re taken down a trip of nostalgia as hits such as Sherry, Big Girls Don’t Cry, Walk Like a Man, Oh What a Night, Bye Bye Baby and many more are brought to life on stage.

The winner of four Tony Awards, Jersey Boys is without a doubt a musical for everyone. If you knew nothing about The Four Seasons, by the time the curtain drops, you virtually know the entire history of not only the band, but also the songs that have become timeless hits.

There is something truly remarkable about the ‘rock and roll’ era and Jersey Boys encompasses exactly that and so much more. The story itself is an emotional roller coaster that keeps you guessing as to what will happen next. This accompanied with the first rate production value, talented cast and the well orchestrated musical sequences, will leave captivated for the entire duration of the musical.

Jersey Boys is not only the story of one of the most successful acts in rock and roll, it is also an historical insight into the yesteryear of ‘50s and ‘60s USA. With shady but likeable characters that keep you on the the edge of the seat, you’ll find yourself rooting for these underdogs to have their big break, and that they do. What I found really added to the vibrancy of the musical and the entertainment factor was how the set design and stage direction brought on moments when you felt you were literally thrust into a time machine, where you can almost forget that you are actually sitting in a theatre in 2012.

The ensemble is vocally strong and swift during the transitions between scenes, which meld seamlessly into one another creating one of the captivating musicals you will ever see and but also telling one of the greatest stories ever told. The only faults I personally found with Jersey Boys was that it had to end.
