Sometimes things in a production just work perfectly together and there is no other way to describe it, Bangarra does it time and again with its dance numbers. There is something that is mesmerising about each dance piece and the choreography, sets, costumes and music make it all that more magical.
Bangarra Dance Company was founded in 1989 and is Australia’s leading indigenous contemporary dance company that performs annually about 110 performances and after seeing Terrain you can understand the success.
Stephen Page has been at the reigns of the company since the early 1990s, with 2012 marking his 20th year as Artistic Director.
His latest creation incorporates the influences of the land and the expanses of Lake Eyre. With dance numbers like Red Brick, Shields, Reborn, Spinifex, Salt, Reflect and Deluge you can see this production draws the imagery from the landscape of the outback.
The choreography by Frances Rings is hauntingly beautiful. It draws on the traditional influences of the indigenous culture and presents them in such a way that is thoroughly modern and strikingly enchanting.
Jennifer Irwin’s costumes only enhance the overall beauty of this production. Once again drawing on the stark reality of the bush and bringing to the stage something and works in harmony with the choreography and music.
David Page (of Page 8 fame) has composed some amazing music that is incredibly earthy and guttural with a strong bass, this is the type of music that you could easily listen to for hours.
Now let’s talk about the dancers, they are amazing! The movements across the stage are daunting and dream like at the same time. Some of the things these bodies do on stage make you marvel at the creativity of Bangarra. There is not an ounce of fat on any of the dancers bodies and all I can say is damn they are hot! Look out for one of the very toned dancers with a very sexy tattoo slightly covered with body paint.
Watching all the pieces of the production work together to present something that is beautiful dancing, flowing costumes and hunting music really makes you realise importance of Bangarra Dance Company and it’s influences on the Australian performance scene.
It is not often that Bangarra present a dance number at the Opera House and it is definitely worthwhile making the trip to the great white sails on the harbour to see something that is of a standard that you would expect to see either on Broadway or the West End.
Terrain is currently playing at the Drama Theatre at the Opera House.
