Film - I Do
I must say I love a good romantic comedy and no one does a better modern day fairytale like the French. Eric Lartigau’s I Do is a must see for all. His take on romance has everything for a sure hit and if nothing else the breathtaking shots of the most romantic city in the world are certainly worth paying the price of admission for.
Luis (Alain Charbat), an ageing single man very unlucky in love, is being forced by his clan of sisters and his over-the-top mother to find a suitable girl to wed. Their relentless pressuring makes him resort to hiring the beautiful Emma (Charlotte Gainsbourg) to pose at his fiancée. The plan is to portray her as perfect wife material, but she will leave him jilted at the altar, therefore silencing his family on the topic of marriage forever more. A simple plan, right? Not so. This simple plan becomes complicated very soon, and the inevitable mess sends both Luis and Emma’s life into a whirlwind journey of laughter and heartbreak.
Lartigau does a wonderful job at directing this beautifully crafted romance. The shots of the Paris are stunning, and almost hynotically they reel you straight in. The film’s dialogue is very intimate, the co-incidences are hilarious and the story builds towards a strong climax that leaves your heart melting into your stomach. Brace yourself for the overbearing mother, especially when she gives the two main characters a talk about sex. It left me in stitches.
Charbat is brilliant as the quirky and likeable Luis. His charisma and charm radiates through the screen. He stands somewhere between George Clooney and Jack Nicholson. Alongside him is the beautiful Charlotte Gainsbourg. She imbues the character of Emma with just the right combination of elegance and rebellion – you will fall in love with her at first sight. Together the pair are an oddly perfect pair, driving the plot through a whirlwind of mishaps and attraction.
Ultimately a classically good romantic comedy is hard to come by. You want a film like this to leave you breathless. I Do certainly delivers, much in the way the classic romantic comedies do. Think Sleepless in Seattle, When Harry met Sally and even The Truth about Cats and Dogs.
I Do is screening nationally through Hopscotch Films.
