Mardi Gras Parade

Arrive early, use public transport, leave glass bottles at home and bring a healthy dose of respect and acceptance.

Every day, everybody takes brave steps. Some are fairy steps and some are giant leaps for acceptance but each time someone makes a stand we move forward – “To equality and beyond”.

Well here we are, 30 years after a momentous time in our history, and still we are not equal citizens. A few years ago it looked like we would never get to celebrate our 30th anniversary but despite adversities, Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras and the GLBTQ community banded together to see New Mardi Gras rise from the ashes. The theme of Mardi Gras 2008 is “Brave New Worlds” and this year we will celebrate the time in our past where people had the courage to step out into the unknown because they believed that what they were doing was right.

• The first time somebody stood up and said no to discrimination.
• The first time someone said yes to care for someone with HIV.
• The first time somebody said no to hate and homophobia.
• The first time someone stood up, said “Yes, I still love my gay child” and marched in support of their son or daughter.
