In conjunction with Charles Hewitt Gallery in Sydney, Michael Schlieper’s latest exhibition of extraordinary landscape paintings will open at Bathurst Regional Art Gallery on 4 April 2008.
Sunny Corner and Jeff ’71 is a new exhibition which showcases the painter’s almost photographic representations of the Australian landscape.
Fuelled by the intricate details of nature, Schlieper’s luminous studies of the Australian landscape are based on his travels around country NSW. Several of the works have been inspired by a now defunct gold mine, Sunny Corner near Bathurst.
The paintings and photographs explore the impact of the mining boom on the local township, questioning the fragile relationship between human activity and the natural landscape. The canvases owe their genesis to when Schlieper lived in the area in 1971. The title refers to Jeff, a close friend and confidant in the artist’s life at this time.
German born, Schlieper’s career is impressive, with continual demand for his works since he began painting in the 1970s. His paintings can be found in major private and public collections such as the National Gallery of Victoria.
Gallery Director Charles Hewitt has represented the artist since 2000.
“Michael Schlieper’s paintings are a remarkable feat for contemporary landscape painting in this country,” Hewitt says.
“Working from Sydney’s north shore, he travels all over the state in his quest for painting nature, and referencing the hidden, more cryptic tales behind the scenes. Michael’s body of works never ceases to move, activate and inspire the viewers’ imagination.”
